Planning New Year's Eve in Pune comes down to four things: book early, know what your pass includes, plan your route around the road closures, and sort out your ride home before midnight. The best parties in Koregaon Park, Kalyani Nagar, Yerawada, Viman Nagar and Mundhwa sell out weeks ahead. In recent years, licensed bars and clubs in Pune city have been allowed to stay open until 5 AM on 31 December, instead of the usual 1:30 AM, so the night is long. That makes planning matter even more.

This guide is written by the team at Ellara, a bar, restaurant and club in Yerawada. New Year's Eve is our biggest night of the year, so here is everything we'd tell a friend who asked how to plan it.

What kind of New Year's Eve do you want?

The biggest mistake is booking the loudest party in town when your group really wants a long dinner, or the other way round. Decide on the night first, then the venue.

The big club countdown

A DJ, a packed dance floor, confetti at midnight and dancing till late. This is the classic Pune New Year's Eve, and it's the one that sells out first. Expect higher prices, stricter entry rules and a crowd that arrives after 10 PM.

Best for: groups of friends who want to dance, couples who want the full countdown.

Dinner, then the countdown

A proper dinner from around 8:30 PM, then drinks and the countdown in the same venue. You get a seat, good food and the midnight moment without being on your feet all night. Venues with a restaurant and a dance floor under one roof are made for this.

Best for: couples, mixed-age groups, anyone who wants to eat well before the party starts.

A lounge or cocktail-bar night

Smaller rooms, a good cocktail list and music you can still talk over. Usually easier to book than the big clubs, and a good choice if you'd rather toast the new year with a few close friends than with a few hundred strangers.

Best for: small groups, dates, people who don't want to dance.

A group or office celebration

Reserved sections, set menus and fixed per-head packages make New Year's Eve simple for bigger groups. If you're organising for ten or more people, ask venues about private areas and group packages early. These are the first to go.

Best for: big friend groups, teams, families.

Where to celebrate New Year's Eve in Pune

  • Koregaon Park has the most venues in one place, which makes it lively but also the most crowded. In past years, police have kept a heavy presence in KP and nearby areas on 31 December, and North Main Road gets very busy.
  • Kalyani Nagar and Yerawada suit dinner-and-countdown nights. They are central to the east side but quieter to reach than KP, and well away from the FC Road and MG Road closures.
  • Viman Nagar is close to the airport and IT parks, with large pubs and breweries that work well for office groups.
  • Mundhwa and Koregaon Park Annex host many of the biggest ticketed DJ events and open-air parties.
  • Baner and Balewadi High Street are the natural choice if you live on the west side and don't want to cross the city on the busiest night of the year.

How New Year's Eve passes usually work in Pune

Most venues sell entry in one of a few ways, and the price only makes sense once you know which one you're buying.

  • Cover charge (redeemable): you pay at entry, and the amount counts towards what you eat and drink. Good value if you'd be spending that much anyway.
  • Inclusive package: a fixed price that covers food and drinks for a set time, or unlimited from a set menu. Read the fine print on which drinks are included and until what time.
  • Table or section booking: a minimum spend for a reserved table, usually the best option for groups.
  • Couple, stag and group passes: many clubs price these differently, and some limit stag entry on New Year's Eve.

Before you pay, ask:

  1. Is the pass redeemable, inclusive, or entry only?
  2. Which drinks and dishes are included, and until what time?
  3. Is a table or seat guaranteed, or is it standing only?
  4. What are the stag, dress-code and age rules at the door?
  5. Is there a refund or transfer policy if your plans change?

When to book your New Year's Eve party

  • Late October to mid-November: early-bird passes and the best tables. The ideal time for groups and corporate bookings.
  • Late November to mid-December: the main booking window. Popular line-ups and dinner packages start to sell out.
  • The last week of December: limited choice and higher prices, but last-minute releases do happen.
  • On the night: don't count on walking in. Most good venues are sold out or at capacity by 10 PM.

Rules and timings to know before 31 December

What time do pubs and clubs close on New Year's Eve?

On a normal night, bars and clubs in Pune must close by 1:30 AM. For New Year's Eve, Maharashtra's excise department has in recent years allowed licensed bars, clubs and permit rooms in Pune city to stay open until 5 AM, and in some years on 24 and 25 December too. The order is usually issued in the last days of December, and authorities can cut the hours back if needed. Individual venues also set their own closing time within that limit, so check with yours.

Drinking age and ID

Pune follows Maharashtra law: 25 for spirits, 21 for beer and wine. Expect strict ID checks on New Year's Eve, so carry a government photo ID, even if you look old enough.

Police checks and road closures

Pune police step up drink-driving checks on 30 and 31 December, with breathalyser checkpoints at junctions across the city and a large presence in areas like Koregaon Park, Viman Nagar and Balewadi High Street. Over 200 drivers were booked for drink-driving in Pune over the last New Year period. In 2025, FC Road and MG Road became no-vehicle zones from 5 PM on 31 December until the crowds cleared, so plan your route around them. This year's traffic advisory usually comes out a few days before the 31st.

Getting there and home safely

  • Don't drive if you're drinking. It's the busiest night of the year for police checks, and it isn't worth the risk.
  • Book your cab before midnight, or schedule it ahead. Ride-hailing prices surge right after the countdown and again at closing time.
  • Pick a designated driver at the start of the night, not at 2 AM.
  • Arrive early. Traffic builds from the evening, and closures start from 5 PM in some areas.
  • Agree on a meeting point in case phones die or the group gets split up.

Your New Year's Eve checklist

  1. Decide on the kind of night your group wants.
  2. Shortlist two or three venues in an area that's easy for everyone to reach.
  3. Book by mid-November for the best prices and tables.
  4. Confirm what your pass includes, and the entry and dress-code rules.
  5. Plan your route around the road closures.
  6. Sort out your ride home or designated driver.
  7. Carry ID and a charged phone.
  8. Arrive before 10 PM so you're inside well before midnight.
