Pune's nightlife is concentrated in a handful of neighbourhoods on the city's east and west sides: Koregaon Park, Kalyani Nagar, Viman Nagar, Mundhwa, Yerawada and Baner–Balewadi. Most pubs and clubs open in the evening, get busy after 10 PM and, by Pune police order, have to close by 1:30 AM, with last orders around 1 AM. If you plan your night around that clock, Pune is one of the best cities in India to go out in: great cocktail bars, serious dance floors and food that is worth showing up for on its own.

This guide is written by the team behind Ellara, a bar, restaurant and club in Yerawada. We spend every night in Pune's nightlife, so here is what we would tell a friend: where to go, what the rules are and how to plan a night that doesn't end in a queue or a cancelled cab.

The best areas for nightlife in Pune

Every area has its own personality. Pick the one that matches the night you want, rather than the one with the most venues.

Koregaon Park

Koregaon Park (KP) is Pune's best-known nightlife address. North Main Road and the lanes around it have the city's densest mix of pubs, lounges, rooftop bars and late-night restaurants, and it draws a crowd that ranges from students to expats. It is the easiest place to start a night with a plan B, because if one place is full, another is a short walk away. The trade-off is that weekend parking is difficult and the most popular places fill up early.

Best for: bar-hopping, first-timers in Pune, a big group that can't agree on one place.

Kalyani Nagar

Just across the river from Koregaon Park, Kalyani Nagar is a little more polished and residential. Expect cocktail-led lounges, stylish restaurants that turn into bars after dinner, and a crowd that dresses up a bit more. It works well when you want good food and good drinks in the same place, without the full club experience.

Best for: date nights, dinner-and-drinks, celebrating something.

Viman Nagar

Viman Nagar sits close to the airport and the big IT parks, so it is busy straight after work on weekdays as well as at weekends. You'll find microbreweries, sports bars and large casual pubs that suit groups of colleagues. It is one of the more relaxed areas, where the night often starts with an after-work pint and turns into dinner.

Best for: after-work drinks, office groups, watching a match.

Yerawada and Airport Road

Yerawada sits between Koregaon Park, Kalyani Nagar and Viman Nagar, which makes it one of the most central places on the east side for a night out. It is quieter than KP, easier for parking and quick to reach from the airport and the hotels along Airport Road. This is where Ellara is, on Ishanya Mall Road opposite the Golf Course, with a dining room, a lounge and a club under one roof.

Best for: a whole night in one place, groups coming from different parts of the city, travellers staying near the airport.

Mundhwa and Koregaon Park Annex

East of Koregaon Park, Mundhwa and the KP Annex area have become home to some of Pune's larger venues: big-format clubs, open-air lounges and places built for DJ nights and events. They are usually a short cab ride from the rest of the east-side scene.

Best for: big DJ nights, dancing, events with international or touring artists.

Baner and Balewadi High Street

On the west side of the city, Baner and Balewadi High Street serve the Hinjewadi, Aundh and Wakad crowd. Balewadi High Street in particular is a walkable strip of bars, breweries and restaurants, and it is the natural choice if you live or work on that side of Pune and don't want to cross the city at night.

Best for: west Pune residents, Hinjewadi IT crowd, walkable bar-hopping.

FC Road and JM Road

Fergusson College Road and Jangli Maharaj Road are Pune's student heartland. The scene here is more about cafés, budget-friendly bars and early evenings than late-night clubbing. It is a good place to start a night with food and conversation before heading east.

Best for: students, early evenings, affordable plans.

Pubs, clubs or lounges: what kind of night do you want?

Pune's venues don't always fit neatly into one box, but knowing the difference saves you from turning up in the wrong place for your mood.

  • Pubs and microbreweries are about beer, food and conversation. Music stays in the background, groups are welcome and you rarely need to book unless it's a weekend or a big match.
  • Lounges and cocktail bars are about the drinks and the setting. Expect a cocktail menu worth reading, softer lighting and music you can still talk over. Good for dates and smaller groups.
  • Clubs are about the DJ and the dance floor. They get going late, often charge a cover at weekends and are strictest about dress codes and entry.
  • All-in-one venues combine a restaurant, a bar and a dance floor, so you can eat, drink and dance without moving your group across town at midnight. With a 1:30 AM closing time, that saves a lot of the night.

What to know before you go out in Pune

What time do bars and clubs close in Pune?

Bars, pubs and permit rooms in Pune have to close by 1:30 AM. Pune police have enforced this strictly since 2024: kitchens and bars stop taking orders around 1 AM, and music stops by 1:30 AM. Venues that stay open later risk being shut down, so don't plan on an after-party at a bar. If you want a long night, start earlier.

Drinking age and ID

Under Maharashtra law, the minimum age is 25 for spirits and 21 for beer and wine. Many venues check ID at the door, especially at clubs and on weekends, so carry a government photo ID even if you look old enough.

Cover charges and entry

Many clubs charge a cover at weekends and on event nights, usually per couple or per person. It is often redeemable, which means it counts towards what you eat and drink. Some clubs limit stag (men-only) entry on busy nights or ask groups of men to book in advance. Check the venue's Instagram or call ahead before you travel.

Dress code

Smart casual works almost everywhere. Clubs and upscale lounges can turn people away for shorts, sleeveless vests, sports jerseys or flip-flops, so if in doubt, wear closed shoes and a collared shirt or a smart top.

Getting home safely

Never drink and drive. Pune police run frequent drunk-driving checks, especially at weekends and around festivals, and the penalties are heavy. Ride-hailing apps work across the city, but demand peaks right at closing time, so either book your ride a few minutes before 1:30 AM or agree on a designated driver at the start of the night. The Pune Metro doesn't run late enough to help after a night out.

The best nights to go out in Pune

  • Monday to Thursday: easier to get a table, better for conversation, food and cocktails. Thursday is often a live-music or acoustic night.
  • Wednesday: many venues run ladies' nights, so dance floors are busier than the rest of the week.
  • Friday and Saturday: the city's biggest nights. Book a table, expect covers at clubs and arrive before 10:30 PM.
  • Sunday: brunches and laid-back sundowners rather than late nights.

Big dates fill up weeks ahead. New Year's Eve, Diwali week, Christmas and Valentine's Day usually sell out, so if you're planning one of those, book as soon as venues announce their events.

How to plan the perfect night out in Pune

With a 1:30 AM finish, the best nights in Pune are planned backwards from closing time. Here's a simple plan that works for most groups:

  1. 8:00 PM: dinner. Eat properly first. Sharing plates work best for groups.
  2. 9:30 PM: drinks. Move to the bar or lounge while it's still easy to get a seat and the cocktails come out quickly.
  3. 11:00 PM: dance. This is when DJs pick up the tempo and the dance floor fills.
  4. 1:00 AM: last orders. Get your last round in and settle the bill early to avoid the rush.
  5. 1:20 AM: book your cab. Beat the closing-time surge and get home safely.

The easiest way to do all five is to choose one venue that does all three, so you don't have to move a group across the city at midnight.

Spending your whole night at Ellara

We built Ellara for exactly the night described above. It is one address with four moods: a dining room for long, shared dinners of Indian, Pan-Asian and Continental food; a lounge with Chesterfields, neon and late cocktails; a club with LED ceilings and a striped dance floor; and space for live music and private events.

  • 40+ signature cocktails and 12 beers on tap
  • Open 7 days a week: 12 PM–1 AM Monday to Thursday, 12 PM–1:30 AM Friday to Sunday
  • Location: Ishanya Mall Road, opposite the Golf Course, off Airport Road, Yerawada, Pune 411006, minutes from Kalyani Nagar, Viman Nagar and Koregaon Park
